DGC v Somerset at Dainton Park on 11th September 2025
Bob Beeson reports ... We were greeted at Dainton by some rather inclement weather with showers & sunshine in the forecast. After light refreshments and team announcements, I made my way to the first tee partnered by Dainton's Captain Gary. I was somewhat apprehensive after my recent lay off but managed an acceptable drive to everyone's amazement and we enjoyed a very competitive match against Captain John & his partner Peter. After several heavy downpours ,we came off the 15th all square and decided an honourable half was in order which allowed us to dry off from the latest cloudburst. Devon then lost match 2 … [Read more...]
DGC v Devon Lady Captains at The Warren 4th Sept 2025
Bob Beeson reports ... Again and not for the first time this season, we arrived at the Warren anticipating that we were in for a soaking. Luckily, this did not materialise but was replaced by the usual thrashing by our dear Ladies. Unfortunately, I had not recovered from my exploits of last week, so once again Dave Smith, my able Vice, took my place. I took over starting and photographic duties and was very impressed with the standard of tee shots off the first. The first match was very tight and although we lost the first 3 matches, they were I understand, of a very high standard. After a win in match 4, I hoped our tail might have … [Read more...]
DGC v Devon Juniors at Stover – 28th August 2025
Bob Beeson reports ... This was an eagerly anticipated revenge match for the Devon Juniors, following last year’s 5-1 victory to DGC. We were met with rather indifferent weather with heavy showers in the forecast. Bacon baps & chips were demolished and then yours truly and Stover's Vice Captain Neil Goddard (8) faced the formidable pairing of Captain Freddie Elgin (+2.6) & Joe Aldous (+0.1) on the 1st tee. We just got our noses in front until the old 4th hole which is being played as a par 3 replacing the 7th hole which is out of play. Yours truly had a hole-in-one for a net 0!!! After celebrations and some … [Read more...]
DGC v Worcestershire (13th Aug) and Gloucestershire (14th Aug) Tour
Bob Beeson reports ... After a stop off at Stinchcombe Golf Club on the way, 12 of the team enjoyed a practice round whilst I enjoyed the cool comforts of the club house. The other 3 members of the squad were meeting us at our headquarters at the Premier Inn in Bromsgrove where we enjoyed good food and planned our campaign over a drink or two on the opposition over the next two days. Day 1 saw us make the short journey to face Worcestershire at Droitwich Golf Club where we were greeted by electric gates and a very prestigious clubhouse and course. Captain John greeted us and after a short history of the club from the present Captain, we … [Read more...]
DGC v Wiltshire at Tavistock – 7th August 2025
Bob Beeson reports ... We were greeted at Tavistock with the infamous Dartmoor mizzle which blew in and out for most of the day before lifting at 5pm. Captain Rod of Tavistock gave us an entertaining greeting to the day before the team announcements and a light lunch. Unfortunately I was unable to play again and Mr Vice took my playing place as I am still suffering and need to rest my shoulders ready for the last tour of the year next week. Local knowledge came to the front with Rod giving his own unique set of directions to both sides in his match with Dave. The result was a tight finish with victory going to the home side. The rest of … [Read more...]
Devon v Cornwall at Exeter – 31st July 2025
Bob Beeson reports ... Rather indifferent weather greeted us at Exeter Golf & Country Club with the Cornish boys reporting flash floods on their journey east and phone calls from my Torquay contacts warning me to take my brolly with me. The teams enjoyed sandwiches and chips and after the pairings had been announced, they made their way to the first tee. Once there, they were greeted by the tail end of a ladies DCVLGA meeting with the last match including a 92-year-old using a single-seat buggy. I must report that play was not held up at all and a lot could be learnt by anyone watching or involved in the day. Unfortunately, I … [Read more...]
Devon v Dorset at Crane Valley – 24th July 2025
Bob Beeson reports … It was yet another glorious day as we made our way to Crane Valley in Dorset, close to the Hampshire border. We were greeted by a Dorset side buoyant after its recent back-to-back victories in the 6 Counties Competition. The home team was so confident that the word thrashing could be heard before the match started and it looked as if that prediction might come true after early reverses. I am afraid Jeff & I did not help the Devon cause with some indifferent golf leading to a loss, although I will return to that result later. Our second pair achieved a well-earned half before we lost the third game. It all looked … [Read more...]
Devon v South Wales Coast at Whitchurch GC
Bob Beeson reports ... A slightly dull and misty day greeted us at Whitchurch for this match against the South Wales Coast captains - the first not to be staged at St Pierre. Slowly as the sun broke through, it revealed a very green parkland course which proved to be in excellent condition. Battle commenced after a light lunch and along with Malcolm, I enjoyed a very interesting match against Captain Richard and Whitchurch rep David. We emerged winners and this pattern followed in next three matches. Just as we smelled a victory away from home, we were brought down to earth by the home team winning the next four matches. An honourable … [Read more...]
Devon v Warwickshire at Sidmouth – 2nd July 2025
Bob Beeson reports ... A warm welcome from Sidmouth’s President Colin and Captain Paul Lewis greeted the team on another glorious day at this beautiful golf course. After a short delay to accommodate a shortfall of buggies, the 14 man Warwickshire team met up with their Devon opposition over lunch and a friendly 4 ball of Devon captains completed the field. I was accompanied by Paul and as customary, we took on Captain Ron & Ravi in what proved to be a very interesting match on this somewhat unique course. I can’t remember how many times the shot was greeted by “Good shot!” followed by “My God, what did that hit?” and then “I … [Read more...]
