Bob Beeson reports …
We were greeted at Tavistock with the infamous Dartmoor mizzle which blew in and out for most of the day before lifting at 5pm. Captain Rod of Tavistock gave us an entertaining greeting to the day before the team announcements and a light lunch. Unfortunately I was unable to play again and Mr Vice took my playing place as I am still suffering and need to rest my shoulders ready for the last tour of the year next week.
Local knowledge came to the front with Rod giving his own unique set of directions to both sides in his match with Dave. The result was a tight finish with victory going to the home side. The rest of the matches were played in competitive yet amicable manner and the end result was victory to Devon 6½ to 1½.
Dinner then took place with grace given by Captain Rod in Latin dressed in his splendid suit of Cornish tartan. He wore it with pride (being a Cornishman) with his new DGC tie and mention was made of this, and even though he did not know where to put his jam and cream on a scone, he was let off on this occasion. The presentation of the shield was made to myself – it was retained by Wiltshire last year after a draw – and we made our weary way home in brilliant sunshine.
