Bob Beeson reports …
It was yet another glorious day as we made our way to Crane Valley in Dorset, close to the Hampshire border. We were greeted by a Dorset side buoyant after its recent back-to-back victories in the 6 Counties Competition.
The home team was so confident that the word thrashing could be heard before the match started and it looked as if that prediction might come true after early reverses. I am afraid Jeff & I did not help the Devon cause with some indifferent golf leading to a loss, although I will return to that result later. Our second pair achieved a well-earned half before we lost the third game. It all looked rather ominous for our boys but then the tide turned with the tail wagging spectacularly and we took the next 5 games to come out victorious winners 5½ to 2½. Well done Devon – we certainly showed those Dorset Boys how to win away from home!
I mentioned earlier our loss against the John Skinner, the Dorset Captain, and John Hutton, the Club Captain. I am sure the team will remember John H wearing the wrong-coloured shirt and to top that, he was sporting a yellow shirt – the same as DGC – and there is irrefutable evidence in the photograph below. John S commented at the end of our game that he felt he had done particularly well considering that he felt he was was playing against three opponents!
Based on the assumption that John H was indeed playing for us, I have cheekily added the 2 holes he won outright giving us an honourable half in our match. Therefore it was yet another match that the Captain did not lose – a complimentary DGC tie is on the way to John H.!! The result could be updated to 6-2, although that’s probably a step too far.
After an excellent meal, we wended our weary yet victorious way home by way of the now common diversions for resurfacing work with our Vice-Captain not getting home until the early hours of Friday morning.
