Bob Beeson reports …
A warm welcome from Sidmouth’s President Colin and Captain Paul Lewis greeted the team on another glorious day at this beautiful golf course. After a short delay to accommodate a shortfall of buggies, the 14 man Warwickshire team met up with their Devon opposition over lunch and a friendly 4 ball of Devon captains completed the field.
I was accompanied by Paul and as customary, we took on Captain Ron & Ravi in what proved to be a very interesting match on this somewhat unique course. I can’t remember how many times the shot was greeted by “Good shot!” followed by “My God, what did that hit?” and then “I haven’t got a clue where that’s gone!“. We ended up with a victory after a really enjoyable game.
Unfortunately, the rest of the Devon team did not fair so well and the end result was a 4½ to 2½ win for the visitors. It was noticeable that the 2 victorious Devon pairs both included Sidmouth players – easily identified by having one leg slightly longer than the other !!
We then enjoyed a very tasty dinner supplied by the recently appointed catering team and after the Captains did their bit, we wended our way home with Warwickshire travelling to their hotels for their onward trip to Filton on Thursday.
There were many tales of bad luck and amazing bounces and the usual debate on handicaps and shots given but the one thing that I will remember will be the greeting we all received and the hospitality provided to everyone by Paul and his beloved Sidmouth Golf Club.
