Fine and sunny weather greeted 83 players at Dainton Park for Lew Easter’s President’s Day. Malcolm Jordain and Chris Morton had an early start to register players ready for the first tee time at 9:00am and to accommodate changes following some late withdrawals.

The course was in excellent condition and has matured greatly since it opened in 1992 with the variety of trees with their spring foliage providing a welcome distraction to those struggling with their game.
Lew, his wife Mel and helper Kerry provided most welcome drinks and snacks on the 7th tee. It is always difficult to estimate the quantities required and Lew was probably feasting on pork pies and sandwiches for some days following the event.
Malcolm and Chris remained at their post throughout the day to receive scorecards and lent a sympathetic ear to tales of woe. The scores were then entered into Intelligent Golf for processing by pro Richard Woods. Although scores were much lower than expected with many players scoring relatively well on the front nine but falling away after the turn, no one blamed the course. Perhaps the unusual southeasterly breeze was a factor.
With welcomes from Lew Easter and Dainton Park captain, Colin Locker, Malcolm acted as Master of Ceremonies for the prize presentation and having been built up by his description of Dainton as “the best restaurant in Devon with a golf course”, the meal certainly did not disappoint. The only negative aspect was the disappointing number of members who decided that they would not stay for food after all.
