Being well past the half way mark of our friendlies, our next trip into the unknown (for some) took us to Yelverton GC. This is a superb moorland course which incorporates some of the old mining works that sprung up around Dartmoor and the leats that were the idea of Sir Frances Drake to fresh water to the city of Plymouth. For members who have yet to play Yelverton, I can highly recommend it.
After our usual lunch, both teams set off in glorious weather (for Dartmoor). The course was in excellent condition and has recovered well from its problems incurred over the last couple of years with fairways in good condition and superb greens. Our visitors from Dorset were taken aback to see the varied selection of animals that were roaming the course with the frequent questions of “what’s the ruling if my ball strikes a horse?” and “are these electric fences live?”.
With the Captain suffering yet another narrow defeat, things took a turn for the better with a win from our Secretary, Ian and future President, Peter but our hopes were short lived with two quick losses. Thankfully a strong rearguard action was fought and the end result was a hard fought drawn match.
Special thanks go to the staff of Yelverton GC, Bob Beeson and Dave Smith who managed to save what was for those concerned a very trying day due to unforeseen circumstances.
