A lovely day at Saunton GC
The Six Counties 2017 Tournament was already a significant event simply because this was organiser Colin Maw’s final event. Over the years that Colin has invented, organised, marketed and managed the many events it was announced by Graham Davidson, Saunton GC Captain, that in excess of £800,000 had been raised for the club. Evident in the many improvements in the clubhouse and facilities, thank you sincerely from all of us. Together with the news of Colin tribute was also paid to Rodney Beer whose recent passing creates another void in the “special member” category at Saunton and elsewhere in golf.
A very special day then at Saunton, so it proved to be, the sun shone gloriously and the wind a mere zephyr was to provide an excellent day’s golf for all. Somerset arrived determined to defend their title from last year, their first ! Devon equally resolute to wrest back that which was theirs for several years. The tournament also renews old combatants and friendships with the first requirement, make sure you beat your opponents in your game! Last year was a close run thing, Somerset winning by one point from the holders Devon. Our lower scores coming from the West course, this year quite the reverse the East not quite there. An outstanding score from the West, 44 points from Graham Heaman and the slender Brian Rice, (minus 3 1/2 stones) with 38 points the best from Devon on the East. Not enough for Mike Badcock’s eager hands wishing to lift the trophy for Devon once more, six points the difference this year between ourselves and the winners, well played Somerset.
