Supported by President Roger Monson, the Devon Captains team ventured across the border into Cornwall for this annual tournament between Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, Gloucestershire, Somerset and Wiltshire. The format is better ball pairs with the highest 5 Stableford scores from 6 to be aggegated.
Devon’s cause was not helped by a surprise reduction in the maximum handicap which effectively ruled one pair out of contention – something to bear in mind for next year’s event in Wiltshire.
Launceston was well presented although some found the greens on the slow side and putts needed some extra oomph to get the ball to the hole.
The weather was hot and humid, not helped by a light shower about halfway round, but thankfully despite overcast skies at times, there was no significant rain.
The Devon pairs of Ian Black & Neil Sear, Dave Smith & Neil Hayman, Steve Ryder & Richard Pascoe, Brian Waggett & Peter Dunstan, Phil Webb & Brian Mushens and Bob Beeson & Jeff Laing ended up at the bottom of the leaderboard with Dorset taking the trophy for the third year running with 197 points.
One consolation for Phil & Brian was that they witnessed the best pair’s performance on the day as the Cornwall pair of Graham & Roger amassed 47 points with a fantastic putting display – no problem getting the ball to the hole for them!
Hopefully, the next venture to Cornwall in a few weeks’ time will prove to be more successful!
