Sidmouth Chairman Bob Webber with Captains Roger Monson and David Pepperell
Sidmouth Captains challenged Devon Golf Captains to a match, as part of their celebratory year. This was gladly accepted by ourselves and date and time arranged to play the match at Sidmouth. This was also to be our incoming Captain’s first match, Roger very generously elected to purchase suitably inscribed golf balls and were presented to all the players after the match. As is all too common we were very grateful to Terry Thorne and Mick Roberts for stepping in at short notice to substitute withdrawals, Ben Lynch stepped in a couple of hours before tee off, many thanks to all three ! With the unique Sidmouth golf course providing a very special challenge the final result did not surprise, home advantage proving to be very important. The three Super-Subs proving that preparations were of no importance, all three winning their matches. There were some interesting combinations in both teams but the “dream team” in the Sidmouth Captains was without doubt “Rockey 2”, Ted and John put together by Chairman Bob Webber perhaps with tongue in cheek ! My partner Brian Harris and I were overwhelmed or “Rockeyed” by the mischievous union, both in golf and humour but all tremendous fun. Incidentally take a look at the slideshow and see if you are able to spot Eric Morecambe who was apparently Captain in 1979 ! The golf course was in very nice condition and will be much enjoyed by the many players who are yet to play in the many anniversary events planned for this year. After an excellent meal Roger made a very good maiden speech as Captain with interesting and well researched information about Sidmouth Golf Club’s history and players. David Pepperell, the Sidmouth Captain, thanked DGCs for playing in this match which all had thoroughly enjoyed. Previously Chairman Bob Webber had presented all players with a souvenir of the event, an inscribed ball marker celebrating the club’s 125 years existence. Roger and vice Captain David Beer now look forward to leading us into their matches for the rest of the season, good luck from all of us. The first match commences Wednesday 4th June against Oxford Captains followed by Warwickshire Captains the next day.
