Malcolm Weaver – Amrit Singh – Phil Webb – Graham Heaman
Day two and a little further north, Ludlow GC our next venue and apparently within the Ludlow racecourse! Upon arrival we were greeted with a racecourse and substantial grandstand and sure enough within the race track a golf course. I am still trying to find words to describe the course itself. Probably a heathland course in some ways, with gorse and bracken in places but unlike anything I have ever played.
Partners met and play commenced a little early, to help our chauffeurs depart when matches were decided and a rolling meal eaten immediately after finishing. Once again the Devon boys strove to improve on the previous day’s result, unfortunately to no avail. My good friend and partner for the day, Lew Easter, tried harder than most. A topped shot on the first par 3 rolled down the path coming to a rest just short of trouble, after a free drop and me providing precise yardage, Lew hit a magnificent wedge and it dropped neatly into the hole. Immediate shock and much hilarity resulting in our two opponents, having hit good shots to the green, with a putt to halve the hole result, three up. Well played Lew.
Other matches resulted in a 5-3 defeat for Devon and overall 9.1/2 – 6.1/2. Despite the result we all returned home with pleasant memories of Shropshire and Herefordshire and our hosts.
