A bright but at times chilly day welcomed 75 Devon Golf Captains to Exeter Golf and Country Club for Roger Monson’s President’s Day competition.
For many, this was their first opportunity to experience the 2026 course with its two new holes and enhancements to several more. In particular, the bunkers at the front of the new par 3 11th proved to be a popular destination – if only we had had the pro’s advice to play at least one and a half extra clubs in advance. The new cross bunkers on the stroke index 1 5th hole caught a few out too and justified the change from a par 4 to a par 5. Hopefully, lessons will have been learnt ready for the next visit.
Roger greeted players with pasties, sausage rolls and other delights on the 8th tee to give a welcome break from the stresses of play.
The course proved to be a real test as demonstrated by the winning score of 37 Stableford points but most players enjoyed the experience.
Before dinner, Roger gave his presidential address, in which he thanked participants and those behind the scenes, both at DGC and EGCC, for their work in making the day a success. Ian Black, our Honorary Secretary, then acted as MC ensuring that the prize presentation ran efficiently and this was followed by an excellent meal accompanied by the usual banter and tales of golfing success and failure.
