Teignmouth Golf Club 16th May 2013

Bernard Young presents the Andrew Bowl to Ian Butterfield
Bernard Young arrived at the golf club bright and early to start his competition, at his home club where he had seved as Captain in 1984. The weather was mercifully dry and bright with tremendous views from the course. The course had been set up, to provide maximum enjoyment for all, from the yellow tee’s. This decision was certainly reflected in some of the winning scores, a magnificent 42 pts. from Teignmouth member Ian Butterfield (Captain 2001) won the event a clear winner from shortly to retire “Penners” with 39pts. There was not a man present who would deny Mike his place in the “Sun” at last. Mike was finishing his year with a good feeling and thunder, lightning and torrential rain now only a distant memory! In third place a new face Mike Cusack (Elfordleigh) encouraged to join DGCs on the day by evergreen Clem Spencer (Elfordleigh 1991).
Adrian Beaumont provided a fine round to defend the title he won last year at Downes Crediton with 39pts winning the Vet’s prize on countback from Tim Hawkins (Tavistock). The Dainton Park dynastic grip on the Scratch Prize was maintained by Peter Kneebone with a very good 34pts. All agreed that the course was playing well and in good early season condition. So to dinner and how nice to see some Captain’s who have not enjoyed the best of health recently, Tony Jeffs back on the golf course and very welcome after a long and difficult period of serious illness. Harold Cook (Fingle Glen 2007) now a member of Honiton was welcomed by all, Harold not yet on the golf course but looking well hopes to return soon.
The AGM was held in the dining Room with the usual haste, a tradition established by the late Bill Savage, with no contentious challenges or amendments, who would dare? A first class meal was produced by the catering team and enjoyed by all. There then followed an unusual cabaret/entertainment/presentation by the “Dainton entertainment division” lead by Steve “Bilko” Willcocks. To acknowledge and celebrate the recent aquatic adventure of “Penners”, during the course of a recent league match against Torquay, Mike was presented with a range of item’s to mark the fact his golf trolley had finished in a pond, on the first! Item’s included water wings, lifejacket, decoy duck, garden gnome and some live goldfish. This caused much enjoyment and a most entertaining finish to a very good day, especially for our President Bernard whose day was very special.
