Bob Beeson reports
I was driven to Woodbury Park by our Fixtures Secretary which was most welcome. As is becoming customary, I forgot certain items – this time my phone with cards & cash along with my specs !! Once again, the Fixtures Secretary came to the rescue with some cash but I soon found out when going to pay for the buggy and purchase drinks that cash was no longer king and payment by card was the only way. Much to my relief, I was introduced to this year’s Woodbury Park captain and my playing partner, Karl Halford, who kindly volunteered the use of his discount card along with the facility to use his card for payment.
On to battle and after sandwiches and soup, the pairings were announced and Karl and myself made our way to the first tee to play Captain Roger and Rob. There were a few spots of rain in the air but with the exception of a quick shower, it remained pleasant conditions for golf. We had a most enjoyable game and dovetailed well with Karl showing us all how the game should be played. The overall result was a 6-2 win to DGC and there was plenty of well-mannered banter in the changing rooms and club house afterwards.
A most enjoyable dinner followed with the customary comments from the captains. Bob mentioned the name change of DGC to the Invincibles (after the greatest team in the world – Arsenal 2003-2004) which was not greeted too well by the Spurs & Chelsea fans. I do realise we are only 3 games into the season but one can only dream!!
I have had many complimentary comments from both teams on how much they enjoyed the match and the food and service we had at Woodbury and along with the atmosphere, banter and sense of camaraderie among those involved. Job done and we hope for the same in the future.
