Our friends from Gloucestershire had played a match against Cornwall Captains at Trethorne GC the previous day and had had a reasonably short journey to Honiton GC. On arrival, we were all concerned that the weather was against us as we were surrounded by hill mist and a bit of drizzle.
The mood soon changed with the sun making its appearance and the arrival of a plentiful chips and sandwiches prior to play, with the odd glass of refreshment. The day, although warm and sunny, proved a little challenging with fast running fairways and greens with hidden breaks. As always, the Honiton staff were welcoming and helpful and excellent hosts for ourselves and our visitors.
With teams announced and Gloucestershire having halved the match the previous day, the gauntlet was thrown down and play commenced on time from the yellow tees. Because of the oppressive weather, the course provided a good test for many with most matches being quite close. As always much banter and competitive golf played in excellent spirit ensued until victory or capitulation was reached.
Win or lose, there is always an excellent meal to celebrate or distract after showering the dust of combat from our finely honed athletes’ bodies. We were not disappointed – an excellent chicken course was followed by Honiton’s famous wide selection of desserts which were very much appreciated by all concerned. In their concluding speeches, both captains admitted that often they paid perfunctory compliments to the golf course and food. However, this time they really meant it !
A much needed win for Devon.
