Brian Gullick- Rick Waddington – Brian Rice – Tony Ranger
Brian Rice’s first match as Captain, against Warwickshire at Yelverton, offered mixed fortunes. On the positive side was the weather, the course and the dinner which were all excellent. On the negative side was the result of which there is more later.
Unfortunately, Warwickshire were only able to bring eleven players with them and this meant that we provided five players to ensure that a full match took place. This has happened several times in the recent past and thought needs to be given to how to rectify this but that’s for another time.
Brian Rice, playing with the Yelverton Captain, Bryan Gullick, started off really well and were three up at the turn but then, amazingly, lost five holes on the trot, finally losing 2 and 1.
This set the trend for the rest of the Devon team and the only successful match for Devon was the pairing of new boy Brian Steer, current Captain of Libbaton, and Neil Hayman who managed Devon’s only win, winning 3 and 1.
It would seem that all the Devon boys playing for Warwickshire played incredibly well and they all won their matches. They, obviously, don’t want to be picked for Devon again.
So, a 7-1 loss to start Brian’s year of office, things can only get better, we hope anyway.
Having said all of that it was a very pleasant and enjoyable day with lots of good natured banter ending with good food and wine. The result being easily forgotten in the good time had by all.
