Bob Acland – Jim Scott – Bob Webber – Keith Parnall
The last day of Summer and the penultimate match of the year for Bob Webber, affording some welcome respite prior to him completing his Captaincy in 2018. The match against the Ladies next week at Holsworthy and the October Counties Tournament at Saunton but more importantly Captain’s Day at Sidmouth on 14th September the only remaining events in 2017.
The venue for our match Exeter G&CC, recently re-designed the course even better than before! Our visitors were very impressed with the Manorial setting and clubhouse, arguably the most sophisticated in the county! After soup and sandwiches and teams announced play got underway. Regnant Captain Keith Parnall partnered Captain Bob and some excellent golf ensued resulting in a narrow win for Devon. The next two matches also very close with a win for SGC and Devon, in these teams another welcome for regnant Captains, Glenn Page (E Devon) and Stuart Barnes (Thurlestone), good to see you involved., Stuart Jackson (E Devon) another newish Captain.
On the day Exeter was also hosting Devon Golf Seniors Team versus Gloucester Seniors, together with our match taking up tee times grateful thanks must go to Exeter members for the use of their course, much enjoyed by all concerned. The course itself was in very good condition and very much appreciated by those whom had never played it before. Playing off the yellow tees was for some a pity favouring a better test from the white tees, however judging by some very tight games the match could have gone either way. Playing with Hamish Marshall we were impressed with the ball striking of our opponent Paul Spackman, 4 handicap, driving the ball 315 yards on the 18th and knocking a 5 iron through the green, awesome!
After a pleasant dinner, and speeches thanking everyone, it was revealed that the trophy held currently by Somerset was not to hand. Bob also revealed that photographic evidence, on our website report, Somerset were in possession whereby Jim assured it would be hunted down and passed to Devon, to be defended next year.
