Mike Jacka – Brian Rimes – Bob Webber – Nigel Taylor
A well anticipated match by many against, “The Old Enemy” Cornwall, this year returning to Elfordleigh as the venue. As referred to by Brian Rimes later in his speech, all sports are keenly contested when the adversaries are the boys from the other side of the Tamar. The first observation to be made is the residential locations of some players, for instance Bob, the home Captain, over 50 miles from the golf course and Brian, Cornwall’s Captain a mere five minutes along the road. Brian’s appearance in various events possibly makes him a Cornvon or Devwall qualification, Brian’s contribution to golf over the years significant and appreciated. Then of course Ted Rockey, our President, probably the most distant of all players on the day travelling up from Penzance.
The current President of Elfordleigh, Nigel Taylor , had put some thought into the host’s welcome and had placed an informative leaflet on the luncheon tables with a greeting from the club and information about the course, thank you Nigel a nice touch ! The course was in good condition generally considering the previous day’s deluge throughout most of the day. As a consequence all bunkers were declared GUR with optional relief available, to some a great relief! The course has some significant sloping fairways and for those with buggies a welcome aid, for some a mental note for next time. Unfortunately the normal four substitutes had to be introduced, I can only repeat my oft repeated request, if you have submitted your name for a match, yet to be played, but now unavailable PLEASE inform the Captain so that your name is no longer on his list!
With the usual friendly rivalry, and several “gimmees” missed on both sides, Devon were determined to reverse the drubbing received at Launceston last year the boys from Devon dug deep and the final two matches swung the pendulum to home advantage. Finally our thanks to Elfordleigh and their members for affording courtesy of their golf course to compete against “The Old Enemy”, Bob Webber presented our usual cheque in favour of the Club’s Junior Section. Thanks also to Brian and his team for the kind remarks and sporting attitude. We look forward to seeing you all next year in deepest Cornwall, some rumoured West Cornwall !
