A glorious sunny day and the course looking in splendid condition, welcomed Devon and Warwickshire Golf Captains to Crediton. David Taylor, last year’s Captain and standing in for Crediton Captain Alex Williams, welcomed both teams to Crediton.
Warwickshire had problems raising a team so Brian Rice and Vice Captain Ben Lynch were drafted in to strengthen their side. They also had a problem with their Vice Captain falling ill the day before the match. To ensure we had two 16 a side teams tradition was broken and Bob Fletcher’s wife, who plays off 11, was added to the visitors side. A problem for Devon Captains, who was to play against the lady? Without hesitation Mike Badcock, immediate Past Captain volunteered his services, what a gentleman !
After 3 matches Devon Captain Bob Webber was looking worried with his side 2. 1/2. – 1/2 down but the Devon side rallied, with some close games to win 5.1/2 – 2.1/2. The outstanding round came from the last match from the two Doctors Peter Stanley and current Captain Alex Williams, Alex dropping three shots in the first two holes and finishing the round 3 over gross, much to Brian Rice and Ben Lynch’s dismay. A most enjoyable day was had by both teams and we take this opportunity to thank Downes Crediton for hosting the match and making us so welcome. Next stop Churston against Oxford Captains next week.
