Peter Brookshank – Graham Heaman – Joe Angella – Jonathan Lee
Originally this match was scheduled to be played at East Devon GC but, due to unforeseen circumstances the match had to be moved, Sidmouth GC were contacted and kindly agreed to hold the match there, with everyone contacted we arrived at a sunny Sidmouth for lunch at 13.00 hours. Jonathan Lee, last year’s Captain at Sidmouth, standing in for the Sidmouth Captain currently on holiday, welcomed everyone and passed on relevant information about the course.
First tee at 14.00 hrs, the match was played in sunny conditions with a light wind, the greenswere as per normal running fast but, as with everywhere, in need of some rain and warmth. All of the matches finished close except one (dog licence) but they finished their roundwith the Sussex pair winning the last hole and making the best comment of the day saying ” At last they have the honour on the next hole”.
We then retired to the clubhouse for a very enjoyable meal prepared by chef Ian and his assistant Chrissy, Ian has only been chef at the club for a few weeks and turned out a very fine presentation at short notice. The meal consumed Captain Graham thanked Sidmouth for allowing the match to go ahead there and thanked the green staff and staff`for looking after us throughout the day, including Brian Rice who acted as wine waiter for the meal. The Captain then thanked his playing partners for a very enjoyable match with plenty of banter. A donation of £200 was then made to the junior section of Sidmouth GC. Sussex Captain Joe Angella then replied that it was great to be playing matches again and long may they continue.
After toasts were made everyone headed home with the Sussex Captains staying at Otterton for the night then playing Sidmouth again the next day before heading home. A special thanks to Mike Badcock, Match Secretary, for rearranging the match at short notice. Mike also managed to misplace his car keys, after much searching they were found by his playing pasrtners where he had put them, in his bag.
