This match was part of the 125th Anniversary celebrations of Saunton Golf Club’s foundation, another milestone in this prestigious club’s history. Upon arrival a pleasant surprise, Saunton’s Ladies Past Captains were also playing a separate match, on the West Course, versus Devon Ladies Past Captains, a very good idea. Trevor Reynolds was given the honour of Captaincy throughout this special year of celebrations, a popular decision I am sure. Trevor’s contribution in the golfing world is pretty well peerless including, Secretary at Saunton GC, County Secretary as well as President of Devon Golf, SW Counties and other positions in golf too many to list, a fitting reward for his service to our wonderful sport.
Driving to the club a couple of forecasted heavy showers provided concern for all taking part however, and not for the first time, Saunton provided a wonderful sunny day with no hint of weather being experienced elsewhere in the County, heavy rain, thunder and lightning. Joining the ladies for a light lunch of a moreish vegetable soup and sandwiches, pairings announced and play commenced on the East Course.
As is all too common I’m afraid, three replacements were required from the original team selection and then, a replacement for a replacement, thanks to all those involved. The course, always a challenge to the visitor, was however at its benevolent best with the wind a mere zephyr. As always tight fairways and undulating greens demand accurate ball striking and intuitive reading. Our opponents were surprised at one or two uncommon pin positions which, on occasion, made for some interesting putting results. My partner Mike Badcock, DGC Match Fixture Secretary, unfortunately became unwell on the course but typically, albeit with a restricted swing, soldiered on but had to leave unable to attend the meal. All will be pleased to learn, after contacting Mike today, he is feeling somewhat better.
The day was completed with an excellent dinner together with our female counterparts, all coiffured et parfumed, with appropriate tributes paid to the history and celebratory year of what is arguably Devon’s premier golf club. Little wonder that the club has a healthy waiting list for membership with its excellent facilities both on and off the golf course, top quality links golf with benefits. Quite properly the match ended in a tie.
