This was a match with a difference! Our opposition were clearly finding it difficult to raise a team of 16 as they requested we reduce the numbers to twelve a side and a week or so later told us they would be playing with just ten golfers. They also informed Devon Golf Captains that the dinner would be informal with smart casual being the order of the day. Accordingly, we sent ten of our finest to the lush green parkland course that is Launceston, only to find that Mike Penlington was playing for the South West Secretaries which prompted much to be expected banter.
After a generous lunch that consisted of excellent sandwiches and mountains of chips battle commenced on the golf course and Captain Graham showed his sense of humour by pitting Clive Bennett and Vice-Captain Phil against the Head Professional, Mike from RND (playing off scratch) and his playing partner Julian from East Devon. Needless to say Mike hit his drives out of sight at warp speed but the fighting spirit of the Devon boys won their match 3 and 2. The overall score was that the match was halved with Devon Golf Captains retaining the silverware.
The day concluded with a very good but unusually casual meal but the upside was that everyone got on the road earlier than expected.
