Our friends from Oxford had the previous day played a match against Dorset Captains and had a fairly lengthy journey to Dainton Park. They were pleased to arrive and enjoy the plentiful chips and sandwiches prior to play, with the odd glass of refreshment. The day although warm and sunny was quite windy making the fast running fairways either flattering or testing, dependent on wind direction. As always the Dainton staff were welcoming and helpful as usual, excellent hosts for ourselves and our visitors.
Teams announced and Oxford’s victory the previous day egging on our opponents but laying down the gauntlet for Devon play commenced on time from the yellow tees. Anyone who knows the course will also be aware of the significant difference between the white and yellow course, Dainton not baring its teeth from yellow. Because of the strengthening wind the course still provided a good test for most with most matches quite close however, ‘Chum’ Easter & ‘Rover’ Richards succumbed to a ‘Dog’s licence and Harris & Jordain narrowly avoided the same fate. As always much banter and competitive golf played in excellent spirit ensued until victory or capitulation was resolved.
Win or lose there is always an excellent meal to celebrate or distract after showering the dust of combat from our athletes bodies. We were not disappointed starters, soup or ham hock terrine followed by the legendary Dainton carvery and three dessert choices were very much appreciated by all concerned. Both Captain’s in their concluding speeches made admissions that often they paid compliments to the golf course and food however, this time they meant it !
