There are few days at Thurlestone Golf Club when one would experience the venue and the course to be more inviting to the visiting player. The sun shone and a gentle breeze produced players without sweaters necessary and shorts, for those revealing OOB white posts at first glance. Surprisingly, not only some of our visitors but several of the home team playing the course for the first time. As many will know the sea views, available from every hole, and off course views of the tidal Burgh Island and inward to Aveton Gifford providing countless opportunities for camera phones to exhaust their batteries. Add to this the neighbouring Bigbury Golf course all first timers were not only greatly impressed but paid rather more attention to their pictorial captures than their golf, perhaps?
The matches, as always, produced some excellent golf Neil Hayman and David Taylor booth scoring well with a gross 75 each which of course interested all of our table at dinner. Inevitably the good natured banter and humour attended each match and thereafter. Some may know the complete representation of our guests is, Hampshire, the Channel Isles and the Isle of Wight, consequently one player had to eat and drive home speedily in order to catch the ferry to his home on the IOW.
The course was in very good order, considering we are still early May and on the seabord. ,most courses are on the brink of top quality needing rain, hopefully at night, and warmth. Of particular note the staff in the clubhouse both animated, welcoming and efficient which of course is always appreciated. Our three course meal was very good with a pl;entiful supply of seasonal vegetables. Our Captain Graham and the visiting Captain exchanged compliments and thanks to each other and our venue Thurlestone culminating in our usual presentation of £200 donation of the cklub’s thriving junior section. Normally this would be Graham’s ‘swansong’ however he has nobly stepped up to continue on until September so, thank you Graham and now for the encore.
