The annual match versus the Stewards of our golf clubs the Golf Club Managers Association, also known to us as South West Secretaries, was unfortunately unbalanced once again. Our opponents were two players short so, the heroes of the day, Cliff Harris and Dave Wonnacott travelled all the way from Libbaton GC to play against one another, Thank you gentlemen, a noble effort by you both, Cliff, playing for DGCs returned a win for ourselves whilst Dave represented GCMA. Although less than ideal they chose a course in splendid condition, quite windy but with sunshine setting the balance. Peter Alliss once famously described Thurlestone as “The Pebble Beach of England” and today would have certainly endorsed his compliment, superb seascape and coastal views .
The Captain of our host club, Paul Milburn-Fryer, welcomed all to the club promising a course in very good condition, we were not to be disappointed. The greens, in excellent order, were thankfully of moderate pace on the day which was appropriate considering the fairly strong wind and contoured surfaces. Thurlestone also describes the course, similarly Ilfracombe Golf Club, “See the sea from every Tee”. Turning homeward from the twelfth tee, taking in the view of Burgh Island currently up for sale, Bantham beach and Bigbury GC across the way, those not having a good day on the golf course were easily distracted by such pleasant artistic perspective.
Accompanying our visit to Thurlestone was the news, initially proclaimed by Captain Paul, the previous day club manager Simon Bawden, Roger Bawden’s son, had won the Devon Seniors Scratch Championship, warmly appreciated by all. So to the very welcome meal of either steak and ale pie or, the very popular choice, excellent fish and chips followed by words of thanks to all concerned from both Captain’s. Jeff, our Vice-Captain, enjoying a dress rehearsal for next year when he takes over from Phil Webb, currently enjoying a break in the Emerald Isle. Next match South Wales Coastal Captains at Tiverton.
