Driving toward our venue in sunshine one felt fairly confident that the occasional fog, that can be a problem at Lyme Regis, was not going to bother us today. Although an away match officially, the golf club is only just in Dorset so, thank you to our hosts for arranging such a convenient location for us Devon boys! Prior to sandwiches and chips Dave Picton, Dorset fixture secretary, introduced home Captain Steve Harlow who welcomed all, particularly those who had not yet played the course. Rightly so he predicted the course was in excellent condition, so it proved to be. This is another of our S West courses that offer excellent views of the stunning coastline when the golf is not quite satisfying! Having said that, the course offers some tough examinations and local knowledge of a number of blind holes is very well received, as usual from our hosts.
The greens, as one would expect at this time of year, were excellent with good pace and tricky slopes requiring a good ‘touch’ and careful reading. It was also heartening to see that the home Professional is still Duncan Driver, a well respected Pro who has been at the club for a good many years. Duncan offers all the usual services of a golf Pro including buggies enabling the less able to continue playing into their later years. Another feature of the course is their ongoing battle with the cliff erosion and the 16th is particularly vulnerable in modern times.
Some of the games were very close and could have gone either way and with two halves the result could be considered flattering. Subsequent to a very nice meal and appropriate thanks given by both Captains our team mates looked forward to a reasonable journey time home, with the exception of our friends from North Devon, and the Ashes and the upcoming Open. For some however, and unusually, another match tomorrow at Holsworthy GC versus ‘The Old Enemy’ aka Cornwall.
