Weymouth Golf Club

Collecting my partner for the day, and good friend Lew Easter, we left Dartmouth at 9.15 expecting a journey of about two hours to a course most of our Devon team mates had never played, Weymouth Golf Club! As it was it took two and a quarter hours, with substantial traffic along the A35. Arriving at the club it looked to be a lush parkland course and an impressive clubhouse overlooking the practice putting green and alongside the first tee. The traffic took its toll on a few of our travellers arriving with little time to spare.
We were warmly welcomed by our hosts with a mug of coffee, followed by some ‘substantial sandwiches. The Dorset Captain also employed the, once tradition of Devon Captains, by way of teams announced and sitting in our playing fours for lunch, thereby allowing pre-match chats before play, ideal! For reasons dictated by Covid, our tables were numbered in playing order prior to play and after, very simple and sensible.
The course was indeed lush and in excellent condition, including quite swift greens and receptive, evidenced by some pitch marks awaiting repair. The lay out of the course, on limited land space, proved very interesting, many of the holes benefitting from fairway woods or longer irons for position. The par three’s were all very good and required accurate club selection with much trouble if off-line or short. The course and club have an interesting history however the current course is a James Braid design originally with more recent re-designs adjusting to modern golf and equipment.
Our hosts provided a two course meal with a carvery choice and two desserts, served by a particularly bubbly young lady Danielle, such a pleasure to be served by someone who actually seems to enjoy her job. All the staff were most welcoming. Thank you Dorset Captains and Weymouth Golf Club a most enjoyable day, hopefully to return one day.
