Ladies Who Launched At Libbaton
So here we were, the final match of the 22 season, Graham’s final match of the year and his final match as Captain. The match against the ladies is one of the highlights of the season, competition combined with light banter, humour and a discrete wish not to lose, on both sides. As always a warm welcome from the Herniman family and staff is assured and never disappoints Gerald and family a continuing success in Devon Golf clubs proprietors. As ever the replacement players required, seven in total I believe, from the team sheet initially distributed.
Teams announced play commenced on what was a pleasant surprise, some greenish fairways, the course not reflecting arid conditions elsewhere in the southwest. The greens were in good order and putted well although several ‘gimmees’ were apparently missed ! The Captain beckoned on the 13th declaring their match had already finihed 7/6, a dog’s licence and victory, no a loss ! Rover and Chum kept smiling however, the result sheet offerred a clue 28 shots given by the Captain, always a generous man.
Elsewhere on the course the Captain enquired of his team for solace and reward, only one pair Cliff Harris, using his local knowledge, and Kevin Robson heroically denying our opponents a ‘whitewash’ Bravo. Although rain had been forecast we managed to finish before the much needed heavy showers arrived, a small benefit for dented male egos perhaps? A pleasant two course meal with our opponents, radiant in both demeanour and dress, with thanks to Libbaton GC, the members and the Herniman family for their hospitality and use of their course together with the ladies retaining the Trophy the day was done.
Begging the indulgence of our hosts and on behalf of all Devon Captains’ members, I offerred thanks to Graham and Phil Webb for volunteering to extend Grahams captaincy, supported by Phil, until next weeks Captain’s Day. They have both demonstrated responsibility and enthusiasm toward our association when needed, Noblesse Oblige indeed.
