Something you may notice immediately, where is Stevie Foster’s partner? Apparently, before the team pairings were announced, Stevie knew she was to be one lady short in her team. Bravely and propitiously Stevie elected to play her opponents alone, but, in separate matches each match to count as a point. Subsequent to homely and satisfying sandwiches and chunky chips play commenced in fine weather and a brisk breeze, perfect! The club always provides a warm welcome from some stalwarts of Devon golf, the ever youthful Barry Austin forever a prominent PGA Professional in Devon, unbelievably now a Senior. The Greenslade family with Devon, also a PGA Pro and soon to be a father plus uncle Ollie, Devon’s brother both sons of Chet Greenslade a popular and industrious member. Add to that the young ladies in the catering and bar a terrific inhouse atmosphere always present.
The course was in very good order the greens, of moderate pace for some, were both receptive and true. It has often been said, mostly by visitors I suspect, that the course would benefit being played in reverse order, ie. back 9 played as the front 9, however as indicated by member David Taylor, “What a good finishing hole the current 18th is!” The sound of light voice and fragrant perfume wafting across fairway and green deceptively secreted the nature of the golf being played, the ladies were “on it”. Some healthy reputations were on the line and some old wounds not yet healed however, Stevie Foster was inspiring her team with a double victory and two points on the board, our Captain Graham put to the sword but just avoiding the dreaded ‘dog licence’, his thanks to Stevie were heartfelt.
Results posted, and for some alcoholic anaesthesia administered, dinner was enjoyed by all accompanied by jovial conversation and tales of woe and heroics enjoyed by winners and losers, to some degree. Win or lose it was a great pleasure to entertain our opponents after a far too long break because of the pandemic.
