From Lyme Regis to Holsworthy, back to back matches with a number of fresh faces in our team. A completely different golf course from yesterday with more pastoral views than seascapes. Once again prior to lunch, home Captain John Bewes welcomed everyone to the club but warned, although the course was in good condition, there had been some problems with their greens and they were not as good as hoped at this time of year. This was to be proved later although, the greenstaff are to be complimented on a decent surface provided by a recent top dressing. The course, not long from the yellow tees under 5900 yards, is very tricky in places with accuracy rather than length from the tee a definite necessity.
Our Cornish friends, some living closer to the course than a number of the Devon team, provided many familiar faces, Peter Risely, Colin Beadle and Ross Oliver to name just a few. John Stanforth, the irrepressible Cornwall Secretary on duty elsewhere, we missed you John! Having won the previous day at Lyme Regis Captain Phil, together with Holsworthy Captain John Bewes, was determined to lead from the front and gallantly won on 18, 1 up. This hard fought match trickled down through the team and a deserved win for the hosts versus “the old enemy”
An excellent carvery was preceded by an act of felony on the Captain’s table, a full bottle of red ‘Evaparazioni’ wine discharged over the entire table. Casual wine and glass fragments provided for a ‘free drop’ allowing another bottle to be put into play. As always good ‘friendly’ banter ensued and not for the first time, “it’s the people one will remember not the results. Speeches from both Captains and the Shield presented back to its rightful keepers, we look forward to next year, “see you all drekly”
