The Captain presenting the Bowering Salver to Keith Rendell
An unforeseen start to Captain’s Day for some, finding the golf course! Fielding the reception desk, allowing Roy a little more time with members, Brian (Waggs) and I were amused to hear some tales of “location difficulties” for some players. Admittedly, to those infrequent visitors to Staddon Heights, the route is not entirely straightforward, viz one illustrious member passed the same person on the same corner twice within five minutes!
Having successfully arrived at the venue everyone discovered, or rediscovered, the fabulous location in which the golf course is set. If the golf was not up to standard then a welcome distraction is available with the city and Plymouth sound and beyond a constantly changing setting. The Captain had arranged starters and general assistance for everyone involved on the day, much appreciated. Although the weather forecast earlier in the week had warned of bad weather we were fortunate to have an excellent if testing day. On the course the Captain had the support of St Austell breweries, to dull the pain for some with alcoholic beverages and encouragement for those with soft drinks and snacks, prepared and served by his wife Rosemary and daughter Melanie.
The course in good condition, as in all cases, favoured the home player to some degree however there can be no doubt that the Bowering Salver winner Keith Rendell and the Scratch and Secretaries Salver winner Tim Aggett, with handicaps respectively three and one played some magnificent golf to win. David Beer expressed many thanks to all concerned for his successful day and warm wishes to our President Rodney Beer, who was not able to attend for health reasons. So to the journey home, hopefully Sat Nav leading the way successfully, reflections on another excellent day and possible dreams of next year at Stover with a winning score, at least everyone should find their way a little easier. The season has but one more event, the Saunton Salver, with David and his team hoping to win the inaugural event, good luck!
