Winner of The Andrew Bowl, Robin Lovering (Torquay GC 2013) with Ron Graham Honiton Captain
Joining Roy at Honiton Golf Club at 7.30am, without a cloud in the sky, promised a fine day for our President elect Tom Williams. Sadly we already knew that Tom was unable to join us, on this memorable occasion, because of his recent health problems, now well on the way to recovery. Later in the day more disappointment was to follow, Roger Monson our Captain elect telephoned to warn us that he was unwell and trying to obtain medical assistance. Unfortunately for all concerned Roger’s condition did not improve until later Thursday evening, a huge disappointment for him as he was of course looking forward to an enjoyable day. This news however was not to be the most unwelcome of the day, we were to hear that Harold Cook had sadly passed away early Thursday morning. Harold, although a recent Past Captain at Fingle Glen and now a member at Honiton, had been an enthusiastic stalwart of Devon Captains playing in many of our matches. He had been determined to attend the dinner at Honiton on this day so it was cruel irony that this was to be the day of his passing. RIP
With this news a backdrop to the tournament play commenced with the Honiton Captain’s out first. The course in excellent condition proved to be trickier than most would imagine, played off the back tee’s several of the holes were very good tests of golf, witness the winning scores! Honiton’s reputation for being a very friendly club was much in evidence, particularly at the “Halfway House” organised by Honiton Captain Ron Graham and staffed by his charming wife Ann- Marie, they managed to raise £80 for his charity on the day. Many of those present for the Dinner must have been wondering how the new caterer’s were coping with the legendary reputation of their predecessors. Comparisons are quite rightly often thought to be odious so should never be made. After canvassing a number of people, to a man all had enjoyed their choice of food and has often been said it is quite miraculous how on earth so many excellent dishes can be produced, from what is only slightly larger than a four foot wardrobe!
The customary “express” AGM was of course even speedier with the two main characters absent, Roy with humour and efficiency dealt with this unusual situation appropriately, Tom Williams and Roger Monson were both elected to their posts, In absentia. The incoming Vice Captain, David Beer (Staddon Heights 1999), accepted his nomination and thanked the West Region Captains present for their support on the day. Peter Dunstan finished his year with an excellent speech thanking all for their support, particularly Roy and Roger, he had enjoyed the experience tremendously. Peter has been an excellent Captain and a fine role model for his successor Roger, which I am sure he will wish to emulate. I trust Tom and Roger will both be back in full harness very soon.
