Match Result Devon GC’s 8 Wiltshire GC’s 0
A fabulous sunshine start to Captain Peter Dunstan’s year with an outstanding 8-0 result!
Dave Smith the Yelverton Club Captain, who in the traditional manner welcomed both teams, elected to play the match off the white tees and partnered Peter as Match 1 against the Wiltshire Golf Captains President John Houghton and Richard Callow.
The DGC’s team selected by Peter included 5 players with single figure handicaps and the result proved that he is very adept at selecting competitive pairings, including Dave Howard past Yelverton Captain with Paul Smale as Match 2. As a result five pairs achieved comfortable wins.
It did not escape the Starters notice that several DGC’s players; when the Captain was on the first green! were stimulated by the encouragement and support, generously provided by several Yelverton Ladies! as they returned to the Clubhouse past the first tee.
Yelverton Golf Club were exceptional hosts for this match, the course was in first class condition and the panoramic views towards Dartmoor on a clear sunny day are spectacular.
Peter, in his post dinner speech following an excellent meal, referred to an ‘Armada’ style victory and briefly explained the history of Plymouth’s water supply leat, built by Sir Francis Drake which runs through the course.
Finally, he asked Dave Smith to convey the appreciation and thanks of Devon Golf Captains to Yelverton Golf Club’s administrative, catering and green staff for their welcome and generosity to host this most enjoyable match with the Wiltshire Golf Captains
