SIDMOUTH GOLF CLUB 6th JUNE
Match Result Devon GCs 5 – Warwickshire GCs 3

he Jurassic coastline and another warm and sunny day awaited all at Sidmouth Golf Club. Prior to match day Captain Peter was informed that unfortunately Warwickshire were unable to field a full team of 16 and were down to 14 players. To his great credit the Captain set about finding Devon dependables to play as “mercenaries” for the opposition, Ben Lynch & David Beer stepped up at very short notice. Thanks to Peter and the two “Brummies for the day” they played well and fairly, as one would expect!
The Devon team contained four Sidmouth Captains, Roger Bawden, Chairman Bob Webber and the brothers Rockey, John the regnant Captain and of course Ted who was Captain at Sidmouth in 1979. One pleasant surprise on the day, Tony Edge came along to “Have a chat with the lads”, Tony is not yet match fit and able to play but “is getting there”. We all wish him well and look forward to his return to our ranks! Another very welcome participant on the day was Peter Northcott who is limited in his support needing to support his wife in her very difficult illness, Peter and I played together against John and Chris and good fun and banter provided Peter with “a welcome break”.
The golf course was in very good condition and proved how all golf courses have greatly benefitted from the recent fine weather. As those of us know Sidmouth is a very exacting test of golf and has produced many fine golfers from it’s ranks, Roger Winchester and currently Kevin Harper two high quality playing Pro’s. The visitors greatly enjoyed the views off the course and softened the result somewhat.
With three games won and one lost the remaining halved the match was finely balanced. On such a fine hot day the clubhouse was a welcome oasis, the verandah provided a fine viewpoint to witness a Warwickshire Powakaddy diving into the greenside bunker ! The Captain noted this incident in his speech and pointed out that it is the “Captain’s bunker” and warned that the “Fine” was fifty pence for every ball in his golf bag ! To his credit Chris, the owner of the said trolley, presented John Rockey with £5 for the Captain’s charity. Another splendid day with thanks to Sidmouth Golf Club and it’s members for the use of their course. Sidmouth Captains are terrific supporters of DGCs so it was very nice for all to visit them at home, next year they are to celebrate their 125th Anniversary so hopefully we can join with them in their celebrations.
