David Beer – Mike Davis – Ian Jaggard – Julian Phillips
Arriving at Honiton Golf Club a poignant reminder of Alec Gosling’s recent passing, the club flag at half mast and the President’s parking space vacant. Honiton’s Captain Julian Phillips welcomed all to the club, especially Sussex who were playing Devon as part of their tour of the west country, the previous day they had played Cornwall. All the Sussex team had varied accounts of the Cornish venue, Perranporth, the winds had been very strong and the course as ever a tough test of golf. With our usual subs. in the team we enjoyed an excellent lunch before turning our thoughts to golf and, on paper, a strong Sussex Team. One of the pleasures of these inter county matches is the renewed rivalry with previously played opponents, this match provided such occasions, good fun and banter.
A feature of Honiton’s website is the excellent greenkeepers blog, informative and interesting, I recommend having a look. The course, as with the majority of clubs in Devon, needs some warmth for growth on the greens. All the greens had recently been hollow tined but in spite of that putted quite well, if a little tardy perhaps. Wind was still a difficult element bringing with it a cold edge and with the layout of the course providing help and hindrance in consecutive holes. With some games finely balanced until the final few holes the match could have gone either way but with the first three games in favour of Devon, Sussex mounted a comeback with games four and five won by some tenacious golf. Devon managed to secure the overall victory winning games six and seven with Lew Easter and Brian Rice overwhelming their opponents six and five. An excellent meal followed with the usual thanks all round and the Captain David Beer presented a cheque to Julian Phillips to be forwarded to the Honiton Junior section. Another presentation ensued with the Vice Captain, Michael Badcock, presenting the trophy, ominously missing at Staddon, to David Beer for his victory in the annual Captain v Vice Captain match.
