Libbaton Golf Club 5 September 2013

Ready for the off!
Match Result – DGCs 6 – SGCs 2
This match was the final fixture of the glorious Summer 2013 season! We played the match against ‘The Cidermen’ at Libbaton Golf Club, located in the rural Devon countryside, 9 miles west of South Molton, on a beautiful warm day.
Once again Peter Dunstan and the Devon Captains who played, enjoyed another fine 6-2 win! celebrated with the receipt of a sculptured wooden trophy embossed with the Somerset wyvern emblem, presented to Peter by the Somerset captain Iain Robertson.
The selected team included two guests, Gerald Herniman owner of Libbaton and Nick Squire the current Libbaton Club Captain, together with Jeff Laing Past Club Captain. So the team benefitted from considerable course knowledge, resulting in wins with their playing partners Peter Dunstan, David Grieve and Brian Harris respectively. In the traditional pre match manner before the soup and sandwich lunch, Nick Squire welcomed both teams and elected to play the match off the yellow tees. Peter and Nick teeing off in Match 1 with the retiring Somerset Golf Captain Iain Robertson and his partner Norman Banfield.
Libbaton Golf Course par 73, is best described as an undulating parkland course with tree lined fairways, numerous ditches and several lakes and ponds in play for 9 holes. There are five challenging par 5 holes and two par 3’s over water! The course is exceptionally well maintained by Gerald’s son Steve as the Head greenkeeper and his team.
Both teams took their places in the Dining Room for the gourmet quality roast carvery dinner, Penners with playing partner Terry Thorne (Oliver) sat in close proximity to the servery! Their gastronomic prowess was acclaimed by Iain in his after dinner speech!
Most especially! Peter thanked Gerald for continuing to support Devon Golf Captains with his generous welcome and hospitality by hosting the match at Libbaton and complimented Wendy and Louise for the quality of their catering and Bev for serving 32 thirsty golfers at the bar.
We now look forward to gathering at Saunton Golf Club on the 19 September to enjoy and celebrate Peter’s Captains Day, may the sun continue to shine for Him and Us on that day!
Roger Monson
