Devon Golf Captains v S Wales Coast Golf Captains
Royal North Devon Golf Club Westward Ho. 11 July 201
Match Result DGCs 3.5 – SWCC 4.5
Glorious! Glorious! Sun!!! welcomed our arrival to the prestigious Royal North Devon Golf Club to play our guests the South Wales Coastal Captains, the majority of their team being past Captains of the St Pierre Golf and Country Club.
Traditionally, Devon Golf Captains invite the current Captain of the host Club to play; RND have a President (Captain) Dougie Bushby, unfortunately not available to play. To our pleasure David Miller, Club Chairman, kindly agreed to play and partnered Captain Peter.
Before lunch Hamish Marshall BBC Spotlight, interviewed Jimmy Mullen RND, who has qualified for the Open this week, Congratulations Jimmy! and Iain Parker RND Professional. Ted Rockey also invited….(as a non qualifier in 1962!)… was sadly late for the interview….Reason….stopped for trafficking Porsches into Devon!
As players presented themselves at the first tee, it was evident that the hot weather necessitated the wearing of an eclectic variety of shorts, revealing dazzling white legs, of dubious beauty!
The links golf course, 6424 yds par 72, played from the yellow tees, although dry, was in excellent condition! each of the 18 holes is named….e.g. 2nd Baggy, 7th Lifeboat, 8th Bar,16th Punch Bowl, appropriately named to describe the attire and thirst of all 32 players.
After 3 matches the DGC’s team was 2.5 matches up! thanks to fine play by Peter Dunstan 12 with David Miller 10; Hamish Marshall 5 with Danny Wallace 14; Richard Pascoe 6 with Ted Rockey 17; however in the following 5 matches only a win was achieved by Derek Reed 10 with Brian Rice 18; Overall Result Devon Golf Captains 3.5….S Wales Coast Captains 4.5.
The three course after match dinner was deliciously excellent! great credit to the caterers. David Miller, on behalf of the RND Club, welcomed and thanked Devon Golf Captains expressing his pleasure to host and play in this match against the S Wales Coast Captains. Captain. Peter Dunstan confirmed the Devon Golf Captains appreciation and gratitude to Royal North Devon G.C. for their continued support by regularly offering courtesy of the Clubhouse and Course.
Peter described the Royal North Devon G.C. Clubhouse as a veritable golf museum, displaying 150 years of Golf history and memorabilia and wished the Club every success in the future. Coupled with the DGC’s best wishes to Jimmy Mullen RND.G.C. in the hope that he too will eventually emulate the historical golfing achievements of the RND professional J.H.Taylor to win The Open Championship on 5 occasions during the period 1894 to 1913.
