OKEHAMPTON GOLF CLUB 4TH JUNE
Match Result Devon GCs 4 – Okehampton GCs 4

L to R George Maddaford,Peter Dunstan,Mike Penlington,Clive Yeo
The sunshine tour goes on led by Captain “Sunstan” and Vice Captain “Moon sun”, what a team ! There can be few places where the current spell of fine weather is so well reflected inland as “Okey” ! The woodland ablaze with Bluebells and Rhododendron were absolutely idyllic, trickling streams and river providing a marvellous soundtrack to the many aspects of the views on course.
The usual warm welcome by the club, especially in this their Centenary year, was present from the team at the club. Beverley Lawson, the popular and one of the few lady Golf Club Secretaries, leads with Ashley Moon’s Pro shop providing one of the best ranges in the South West, the catering and bar staff friendly and good humoured.
The Okehampton Centenary Captain David Warren welcomed all to the Club, on this one of their day’s of celebratory events. In the prelude to the match he recounted how the club had recently held a special dinner with guest speaker Sandy Jones PGA. CEO. and the Ryder Cup present. Apparently the PGA will visit clubs who are in the process of Centenary celebration, a terrific evening enjoyed by all present especially those who were photographed with the trophy.
The match itself ended all square and a very politically correct result considering the occasion. Match one provided our first win with Peter and “Penners” enjoying the opportunity to play together again and proving what a good team they make but strangely dry! Moving quickly to a three nil advantage it fell to Roy and myself to balance the occasion, we went quietly on the fifteenth………… The remaining matches, some could have gone either way, determined an excellent record for the history books. The club kindly presented everyone with a centenary pen as a memento for the day, a number of the Okehampton Captains are no longer members and as such enjoyed the day even moreso returning to their Alma Mater.
Finally, congratulations to the club and many thanks for an enjoyable and memorable day from all at Devon Golf Captains.
