The last Hurrah
The sun shines on the righteous, so they say but it also shone on the Devon & Hampshire Captains on the occasion of the match at Sidmouth Golf Club. It was a perfect day to enjoy the magnificent views of the sea and jurassic coast although the opposition were initial more taken with the views of the course from the clubhouse. They realised that their golfing skills were going to be fully challenged with tricky slopes and steep inclines. The course was in excellent condition with neat fairways and greens that were fast and true. Following a lunch of soup and sandwiches battle commenced in the usual good spirit eventually resulting in a win for Devon 5 ½ – 2 ½ . The match was followed by a first class evening meal, well praised by all and after speeches from both Captains, everyone departed having experienced yet another day of golf and good company. It was also a fitting end to David Beer’s very successful year of Captaincy.
It is worth recording that there were three octogenarians playing this day, one from Devon and two from Hampshire. It is quite remarkable that golfers, well into their eighties, are able not only to play the game but are also keen competitors. It makes the septuagenarians amongst us appear as mere youngsters !!
