Match result Devon GCs 3 – Dorset GCs 5

L to R Rick Summers DGC Captain Peter Dunstan & Norman Geddes Club Captain
Like the Grand Old Duke of York, ‘Captain’ Sun-stan marched his artillery troop to the parade ground (Golf course) to the sound of cannon to the right and left from the neighbouring Bovington Camp.
Pre match deception tactics were deployed as the stalwarts from Devon approached Bovington, Tom-Tom’s misdirected Marksman C Boyne to road blocks nr Wareham to delay his arrival at the pre match lunch and combat briefing with Major General Dunstan.
The opposing Dorset yeomanry disguised as ‘Gentlemen Golf Captains’ wearing camouflage green and yellow, prevailed with marginally superior firepower to win the contest 5 matches to 3. As a result the ‘Green Army’ suffered several casualties, unaccustomed to the wet conditions during the later skirmishes. Driving an armoured vehicle, loaded with a selection of weapons, Stormtrooper ‘Badders’ broke down a heavy defeat!
The 7000 metre long ‘level playing field’ was in excellent condition and with a combination of dog-leg holes, numerous bunkers, water hazards and contoured greens tested the accuracy of the Devon troops.
The victorious Devon combatants were Major General Dunstan fighting with Marksman Boyne defeat Captains Summers and Geddes, Lt Col Bulpin fighting with RSM Kneebone and Subaltern Monson fighting with Major Venn VC (Vintage Claret)
After a session in the ‘dressings room‘ all Devon troopers were restored to good spirits, scrubbed and kitted into mess uniform, they proceeded to share and enjoy the companionship of the ‘Dorset Gentleman Captains‘ at the excellent dinner.
Roger Monson
Vice Captain
