ROYAL NORTH DEVON GOLF CLUB 7th MAY
Match Result – Devon GCs 4 – British Seniors’ 6
This annual fixture, now in it’s sixth year, has a special value for many of us and surprisingly therefore Peter Dunstan had to go deeply into subs. and last minute replacements. It can be very frustrating for Captain and Vice Captain to field teams without resorting to reserves for many match’s. If you have given your name for selection and subsequently are unable to play please telephone the Vice Captain as soon as you are aware of that situation.
Some familiar faces are always present at this match in the Seniors’ team particularly Peter Brown, match manager, and Charles Churchill with his faithfull labrador, this year having the pleasure of Steve “Bilko” Willcocks as an opponent, a novel experience for both!
Another familiar face is that of Alec Gosling, the first Captain to lead us against the Seniors’, and a popular character with all of us. This year his endearment made even more special! “Well Malc when I arrived I realised I had forgotten to charge my battery overnight so, Iain Parker kindly put it on charge for me. A couple of hours later playing the first, with my new accquaintance James Rowland, I asked myself why I was pushing my trolley then the penny dropped I had forgotten to collect my battery from the Pro shop and had to push the ****** thing around the 18 holes” !
As usual the match was played in excellent spirit with some very close games, witness the games halved. The weather bright and sunny robbed the course of it’s “teeth” with the wind merely a zephyr. As most will know RND is never a pushover but in these conditions not quite a severe test, the test is in the shape of format – foursomes ! All of the Seniors’ match’s are played as foursomes and the pleasure of such not frequently played by most of us.
This was the last match for our popular Captain and he enjoyed the company of his Vice Peter as his partner, they were extremely successful winning their game comfortably. Game two with Peter “Backbone” Kneebone providing a steadying hand for yours truly, this however the only other full point. The rest of the games mostly very close were halved or lost. We look forward to next year, when RND celebrate their 150th Anniversary with many special fixtures, to our seventh match against this very special Society.
Thanks to all at the club for their service and an excellent meal enjoyed by all.
