David Beer and David Burge
Tavistock Golf Club celebrate their 125th anniversary year in 2015, the match versus Devon Captains just one of the many celebratory events organised for this year. The proximity of several clubs in the Plymouth area meant that several old rivalries were enjoyed on the day, all in good humour. It was my pleasure to play with an old friend Billy Hammett against David Young and Jon Gynne, Jon is currently the Devon County Seniors Team Manager and has successfully steered them through to the national finals at Robin Hood GC 6-8th October, warmly acknowledged by all present.
The Captain chose to play with his friend and fellow Staddon member Alf Palmer, this proved to be a generous pairing against our host for the day David Burge, Tavistock Captain of the club Captains this year, and Sean Kiely. The home pair managed to deliver a comprehensive win against David and Alf to the tune of Rover and Chum and a free entry to Crufts! The remaining matches were nip and tuck until the final game, which secured a victory for Tavistock. The course, in excellent condition, provided benefit to both teams playing off yellow tees. Lowering skies proved to be only a threat and rain only arriving on our journey home.
We wish Tavistock Golf Club an enjoyable remainder of their special year, a Pro-Am to be held on Sunday 16th August apparently still has a few places to be filled. Ironically the Tavistock Captain was not available on the day, he was attending a 125th celebratory event at Churston GC, where we shall also be playing against next week. The day however was a complete success hosted by the genial and generous David Burge, best wishes Tavistock for the next 25 years.
