“Thank goodness for ‘Satnav’ “, was the considered comment from some of our visiting Captains from Wiltshire. Not the easiest golf club to find perhaps but worth the narrow lanes and some reversing to witness the excellent views both inland and seaward. As usual a number of familiar faces were included in the Wiltshire team from a good number of the County’s golf clubs. The catering at Bigbury probably rivalled any food we have enjoyed so far this year, the snack lunch with a very good selection of sandwich fillings and a plentiful supply of chips. Dinner an excellent 3 course meal, both tasty and in fulsome quantity together with wine, this is becoming the exception to the rule when visiting other counties!
The golf course was very representative of the sustained dry period, throughout much of the county. Very firm and fast running fairways flattered some of the unskilled labour on view. Downhill ‘low’ shots seemingly running forever producing one or two eagle opportunities. The greens, recently pin tined, were of modest pace and needful of the rain currently falling as I write this report.
A friendly welcome by home Captain Rob proved a little too friendly by way of a win for our visitors 5 and 3 or, “Battered” as described by Captain Brian. Thanks to all concerned by both Captain’s, following dinner, were to include our usual cheque in favour of the clubs junior section and, a commercial for the club by Captain Rob inviting returnees to open events to include, if required, club accommodation. I wonder often why more clubs don’t use these occasions as a marketing exercise, well done Rob!
