Brian rice – Brian Rimes – John Barnard – Ian Griffiths
The venue Dainton Park, where we always receive a warm welcome, and of course whatever the result all are guaranteed a win with the promise of excellent food after the match. Unfortunately a misunderstanding between the match organisers resulted in Devon arriving with 16 players and SW Secs, Golf Club Managers Association, South West Section, to be precise, with only 12. Our resourceful Captain decided that two of our company would play for the visitors and against two of our members, to be decided by lot. Four of us needing to play in buggies were the obvious contenders, hence, Mike Badcock and I, playing for Devon, played against our visitors representatives Lew Easter and Terry Thorne, resulting in great fun and tremendous “sledging” throughout.
This annual match is always keenly contested and is in effect Members v Staff, the Staff quite reasonably “away on a course”. Dainton, as always, in good condition but needing rain to soften and nurture very dry grass. Consequently the greens were of moderate pace but true and in good condition. The Captain struggled in his match against some good golf from the visitors Captain Ian and the indefatigable Brian Rimes. The Vice Captain Graham, strongly supported by Glyn Kneebone came home with the winning point with a hefty 5/4 win.
Fine food, wine and thanks to the club concluded our day in the sun and a victory against our friendly foes.
