Jason Bradbury – Hamish Marshall – Ben Lynch – Jim Langworth
Arriving at St Pierre it’s always a pleasure to enter along the manorial drive and glimpse the first hole and the pin position. As often the first person to greet the Devon boys Arnie Pigeon, the golf secretary for members, this time however ‘hors de combat’ with a bad back. This was in some way balanced by the presence of George Lowe, the gentle giant, who has been struggling for several years with a serious leg injury and nowadays playing off understandably 10 handicap, he used to play off 4 ! Amongst the St Pierre team many regulars and familiar faces including Eric Brown, John Jones, David Bailey and Alan Beach, always a warm welcome and good humour in our only ‘International’ match. Our Stover members in particular renewing ongoing friendship with our hosts with whom they have an annual match, as do Teignmouth GC.
The golf course as always in good condition, save for the arid brown fairways common place throughout the UK. Several matches were very close and the very strong tail in the Devon team were unlucky not to have achieved a better result from the front four, resulting in a narrow defeat for the visitors. Sitting on the terrace in beautiful sunshine, overlooking the famous par three eighteenth, missed putts and ‘unlucky’ shots were soothed with the odd cold beverage and good company. Next year we welcome our Welsh visitors to Tavistock GC whereupon we will contest the normally very strong team from Chepstow. Finally many thanks to all drivers for delivering us all safely home.
