The Somerset fixture always marks the halfway point of the match season and of the Captain’s year. Enmore Park the venue, often used in recent years, and the Captain was to enjoy the company of past Captain Lew Easter. The Captain of Enmore not available meant that Martin Clapp of Enmore proved to be a very able substitute. Once again Devon fielded four subs. from the original team selected, thank goodness for their support and availability.
Enmore, is in some places, quite a physical golf course and local knowledge provides a reasonable advantage. The course was in very good conditions, relatively lush compared with some Devon courses, the greens were not quite as fast as they appeared but putted well. On paper Devon looked quite strong with the pairings selected, in reality only Adrian Beaumont and relative newcomer David Taylor fulfilled the potential promise. The matches as usual were played in good spirit with several previous rivalries renewed and banter accordingly.
A splendid meal ensued with both Captain’s acknowledging the staff in house and on the course, rightly so. Defeated Devon wound their way home reflecting on the season past and looking ahead to the end of the season, for most of us, to Captain’s Day at Mike’s home course Stover. Always a pleasure to play I can vouchsafe that Stover is in excellent condition currently, having played there four times in recent weeks. Hopefully the weather will be kind to all of us players on the day, splendid support from Stover past Captains is a tribute to the Captain Mike and very much appreciated. See you there !
