After a good night back at our hotel we had a pleasant journey, importantly going toward home, we arrived at our venue Landsdown GC, known to several of us from previous matches. Fairly easy walking and adjacent to the racecourse, tree lined and parkland. Most were confident that the forecast was to be relied upon, dry and moderately windy. Our hosts were very welcoming and a very nice light luncheon set everyone up for an enjoyable match, Gloucester quite keen to reverse the match result at Torquay GC last year.
The first three matches comfortably going Devon’s way the Captain’s optimism was understandable, how we flattered to deceive! The golf course has to close on race days I believe with some holes very close to the racecourse. On this day however the money quickly deserted the favourites with the Gloucester tail strong and decisive. The greens putted well, although a little slower than the previous day, generally enjoyed by us visitors.
Another excellent meal and speeches giving thanks to all concerned, including the golf club, concluded another excellent tour. Trouble was yet to come, a diversion off the M5 meant probably an additional hour on most journeys home. A message from one of our tourers, £10 postcode lottery win followed by a £100 speeding fine from Worcestershire greeted him on Friday morning, shame!
