This annual match versus the ladies is always popular, keenly contested and good fun! This year’s venue, Teign Valley GC, not visited for some time and in some aspects somewhat changed, to those of us not having visited recently. The hotel now just a shell, after the fire a few years ago, is apparently now scheduled for replacement later this year. The bar and lounge area rearranged and user friendly, together with very friendly and efficient staff. The golf course reflected the lack of rain, as do many others, with the greens in good order and putted nicely.
The weather forecast was not too accurate and some mizzle was experienced by most players, welcome for golf courses but not for our opponents coiffure! The Captain, still slightly hurting as a result of our recent defeat against our other ‘Major’ fixture, Cornwall, was of course very keen to secure a win versus our enthusiastic hosts, he secured a noble half. Elsewhere results were varied and in some cases very close, through ability or largesse! Pretty well guaranteed, one hopes, the fun and good natured banter entwined with a competitive and sporting attitude.
With speedy and successful reparation from the elements, our excellent hosts insisted on buying a round of drinks, despite fruitless appeals from ourselves to the contrary. Much appreciated and welcome, especially in defeat, thank you to Caroline and Lesley in particular. The meal, lasagne or mixed vegetable tart, was very timely and the hubbub of conversation and laughter reduced somewhat with a very tasty meal. Subsequently and after speeches by both Captain’s giving thanks to the club for their hospitality, Janet Emery and Ben Lynch presented a trophy for future matches with Janet adding wryly that she had already had the trophy inscribed with last year’s result, a win for the ladies!
We all look forward to this enjoyable fixture next year at Downes Crediton GC, good luck Graham, no pressure!
