DAINTON PARK GOLF CLUB 25th APRIL
MATCH RESULT – CAPTAIN 6 – VICE CAPTAIN 6
The “Green Army” descended on Dainton Park to take part in one of the four “Majors” during the season. Most players resplendent in the green and yellow of Devon Captains’ team colours, most suitable for the very warm and sunny day. Surprisingly our numbers were achieved only by the availability of reserves and late replacements. With 48 players required this is our biggest match play field by far, with a number of new faces appearing for the first time. Not least of these the 2013 Dainton Park Captain Alan Richardson who warmly welcomed all to the club, prior to the first game starting with himself and fellow member Mike Penlington Devon Golf Captains’ Captain, versus Danny Wallace and the Vice Captain Peter Dunstan (Saunton GC), who succeeds Mike next month.
As usual all matches were played with the usual banter, and a little gamesmanship perhaps with this “inhouse” competition, not present when playing against more formal opponents ! The course was in very fine condition, the greens particularly good for this time of year in spite of the apalling weather conditions endured over the past few months. Dainton this year celebrates it’s 20th anniversary and is a credit to Devon golf.
The match had an exciting climax, with the Captain’s team leading 5-1 at the halfway stage, but a complete reversal of fortune saw the Vice Captain’s team fighting back to win the last six games 5-1 ensuring a very fair drawn match. These days the canine observer scans the result sheet for a “Crufts result” no disappointment here then! Brian (Waggs) Waggett & Ian Bulpin had a narrow escape losing to Lew Easter and Alec Gosling 6/4, the Chum and Rover tag however going to Graham Bulford and Geoff Green losing 7/6 to in form duo Terry Thorne and Brian Rice.
The day was brought to a conclusion, after a superb meal from the legendary catering team at Dainton, with speeches giving thanks to all concerned including David Wood owner of the golf club for hosting this special occasion. TheTrophy, donated by Geoff Green, was presented to Peter Dunstan by the Captain to hold in readiness for next year’s event to be held at Saunton Golf Club.
