DEVON GOLF CAPTAINS v CORNWALL GOLF CAPTAINS
HOLSWORTHY GOLF CLUB. 8 AUGUST 2013

L to R Peter Dunstan, Jeff Paul, Mike Jacka, Doug Richards
Match Result DGCs 7 – CGCs 2
The duel in the sun this year was fought in the far outpost of Holsworthy, uncomfortably close to our formidable opponents homeland ! Some time before our starting time drama ensued between ourselves, nerves on edge and eager to attack the enemy the Captain and home player Alan Saunders, rose to greet we three combatants from the South, Penners, Spiceman and yours truly. In his eagerness to spur on us “southern softies” Alan suceeded in emptying a full glass over Derek Reed, top to toe Reedy was soaked and not happy! A further dilemma, as yet James (Rules ) Rowland had not yet arrived could Derek claim a free drop in casual lime & lemonade? Fortunately help was at hand the charming stewardess secreted Derek in the locker room took his trousers to the kitchen and successfully dried them, no ruling required.
The Cornish arrived bringing with them the memory of their overwhelming victory last year at Perranporth. Penners in particular had a score to settle, for some Machiavellian reson he elected to play in his Secretary’s shirt, strange but true! With the home venue, a tricky course in many ways, to our advantage battle ensued. In this match many of us renew old acquaintanceship from previous battles, therefore much good humoured banter takes place but the competition is very spirited. The Holsworthy course proved to be an advantage with the greens not having the lightning pace of Perranporth, the Devon boys adjusted more readily.
With the Captain obviously delighted, with the reversal of last years result and honour returned, Peter entertained us with an amusing rendition of the insurance claim made by a lone builder, involving a wheelbarrow loaded with bricks and a pulley hoist. I wonder if anyone rembers the story once told by the inimitable Gerrard Hoffnung under the title “The Bricklayers Lament”, still available on U tube.
With next year’s away venue yet to be decided I’m quite sure the Cornish lads will be fired up and ready to reverse this defeat. To evidence the result and savour, for the next twelve months, please click the link below.
