David Beer-David Bailey-John Holland-Andy Carpenter This match, previously referred to as South Wales Coastal Captains, is now to be known as St Pierre Captains. The format in future will be against solely St Pierre Captains, where necessary St Pierre members will supplement any shortfall in numbers. Last year at the Welsh stronghold we suffered a crushing defeat 71/2 - 1/2, it was time to balance the books! Dainton Park the venue offered a home advantage although no Dainton Captain had chosen to play, Derek Bryant the regnant Captain was away. The course, pretty well always in good condition, was especially beneficial today, elevated greens … [Read more...]

Devon Captains v South West Secretaries
David Beer-Phil Pascoe-Tim Aggett- Peter Jones Driving to Staddon Heights in heavy rain and having played before at this venue in similar conditions, pleasure was not on the agenda! Typically, in Wimbledon fortnight, the weather improved dramatically. Early starters soon discarded waterproofs and some, with an each way bet, revealed shorts with legs of all descriptions and colour attached. A glorious day ensued with blue skies and of course the quite remarkable views from the golf course. Phil Pascoe, Staddon Vice Captain standing in for the club's Captain, reminded all that if one's golf was not up to par then take in the sights on offer. … [Read more...]
Devon Captains v Dorset Captains
David Beer-Ron Rogers-Chris Woodget-Mike Jewell As far as I am aware none of the Devon team had played Rushmore before but by the end of the day all commented that they would very much like to play the course again. We entered via the imposing pillared gates at the beginning of a long driveway through magnificent parkland studded with mature trees. Although there had been a golf course there in the 1880's, which closed many years ago, the present club dates from the early 1990's. After a warm welcome from the Captain of Dorset, Ron Rogers and the Captain of Rushmore Chris Woodget , teams were announced and battle commenced in warm sunny … [Read more...]
Devon Captains, Shropshire day two.
The Captains Bill Bird and David Beer The short journey from the hotel in Telford, just 15 minutes away from The Shropshire our next venue, proved how well Roy had planned our accommodation. Upon arrival we discovered that the correct title was The Shropshire Golf Centre, with 27 holes splendid practice facilities and a new craze that is apparently quickly growing in popularity "Footgolf". It is so we're told golf played with footballs, at this venue extremely popular, I'm sure we have heard tales of the "Leather wedge" but really ....... The course, very new just 20 years old, was quite typical of it's era, very open some water and long … [Read more...]
Devon Captains Shropshire Tour
The Team On Tour The Shropshire tour is possibly the slightly more popular, of the three tours, there have been some memorable events over the years to this part of the world. The maxim "what goes on tour stays on tour" has certainly applied on occasions! Four of us decided to travel and stay on the Tuesday thereby hoping to be fresh and ready to do battle at Shifnal GC on the Wednesday. Myself, with trusty chauffeur Lew, arranged to meet up with "Badders" and Val at a suitable hostelry in Telford. "We're at the Wrecking Giant at the moment" announced the Vice Captain. This however proved to be the Wrekin Giant but at the end of the … [Read more...]
Devon Golf Captains v Oxford Golf Captains
Gerry Hinnigan, Tony Edge, Mike Sibley (C) David Beer (C) Woodbury Park, a top venue in Devon Golf, has not hosted a DGC match since 2011, so a return to the golf club was welcomed by all concerned. Many of the Oxford team had not previously played the course, to a man all thoroughly enjoyed the golf course and the facilities. A few of the visitors used the hotel and it's excellent facilities to extend their visit. On the day the place was buzzing, a wedding and the fitness centre echoing enjoyment and effort ! Earlier in the week the weather forecast was pretty dismal, the reality however warm and humid. Many of the players on … [Read more...]
Devon Golf Captains v Warwickshire Golf Captains
Stover golf club at it's brilliant best, bathed in sunshine with the greensward looking invitingly lush. Despite the recent cold and wet weather, we all arrived in bright sunshine with a cloudless sky. Sitting on the terrace, with a chilled glass of Sauvignon Blanc our Secretary Roy with his wife Beryl and spaniel Dee. Beryl looking very well has had a very difficult 12 months so we were all pleased to see her on the road to recovery. Those of us that had suffered a battering last year, at Coventry Finham 1-7, were looking forward to try and reverse that result this year. With the course well presented and the greens of good pace and … [Read more...]

Devon Golf Captains v Hampshire Golf Captains
The Green Army on tour Stage two of the tour was realised with a leisurely journey from The Premier Inn, with "The Anthem of the Seas" moored nearby, to the prestigious Stoneham Golf Club. We were joined by our generous hosts who provided an excellent and welcome breakfast, this rather nice touch has now become a tradition in this match. Stoneham is in the top 100 courses in England and much benefit is possible if previous play has been experienced. Unfortunately once again course maintenance had been carried out recently and the greens evidenced same. Remedial work currently underway, to the 17th hole, required us to play seventeen holes … [Read more...]
